Process Excellence Model with a new home in Japan

2011-07-21

Umicore’s Business Unit Platinum Engineered Materials (PEM) is a world leader and a specialist for designing, manufacturing, and marketing of platinum based PGM components with outstanding functionality for use in the specialty and high purity glass industry. To increase the service level to Japanese customers, a local workshop will be equipped and will start operations in November 2011.

This important milestone is the result of the strategy Umicore has pursued over the last decade to be closer to its customers and to differentiate itself through excellence in customer service. It also emphasizes the importance of long-term local partnerships.

“This is an exciting step for us, which is perfectly in line with our vision to reach common goals with our business partners in Japan. We are looking forward to an even closer learning and development with our local customers”, comments Jürgen Leyrer, head of the Business Unit PEM.

The new activity of Umicore in Japan will be part of Umicore Japan KK, a 100% subsidiary of Umicore. The plant in Yokohama is well located to serve customers all over the country. The new facility will employ about 15 people.

Umicore PEM is a global technology leader for either cast or FKS platinum materials based single-source, tailor-made, engineered system solutions to manufacturers of display, optical, technical, and fiber glass. We support the industry to reach the best possible performance in manufacturing processes at the interface of the PGM components and the special glass compositions by means of our Process Excellence Model.

Process Excellence translates into maximum economic value-in-use by total cost efficiency and into security (reduction of risk) and solutions (competitive advantages) to the special glass industries.
